Wine Photography: Storytelling in a Bottle is a photography workshop intended for insiders of the wine industry needing to direct and present their releases with evocative wine photography. The participants will learn how to better photograph a wine “story” for use in traditional print, web site and social media marketing channels.

The workshop will be given on February 20th 2012 from 10am to 4pm in the Stags Leap district of Napa Valley.

This one day intensive hands on workshop is for photographers of all levels wishing to learn different styles of wine photography, how to develop a photographic story that is on brand and beautifully photographed. Tricks of the trade will be shared and demonstrated. Participants will have a chance to practice what they are learning by photographing a few different set ups.

Who should attend: wine writers and bloggers, emerging photographers and wine marketing professionals.

What to bring: any camera that you have working experience with, a tripod if you have one and three wine photos that are inspiring to you.

Location: held at the one-of-a-kind Quixote Winery in the Stags Leap District, the workshop will be a mix of short lectures and live photo demos of still life and lifestyle shooting.

The Instructor: David Duncan Livingston a professional photographer with over twenty years experience. Livingston’s work has been published in magazines like House Beautiful and Sunset, he has been the sole photographer for seven coffee table books including California Country Style. Below is some of his wine photography…Kenzo, Sloan and Trefethen among others.

The Cost: The workshop will be from 10 am to 4 pm, your $200 fee includes a picnic lunch that we will photograph and eat, beverages and treats will be provided through the day. Cancellations after February 15th will either forfeit the fee or apply it to a future workshop offered by David Duncan Livingston.

Questions: email David at david@davidduncanlivingston.com with any questions you may have, you may also call David, 415-383-0898.

Reviews: recent attendees of Livingston’s sold out Food Photography for Chefs & Bloggers workshop had this to say: “an excellent instructor. Thanks again for being so generous and gracious with sharing your knowledge and talents. I really appreciate it” “..how generous David was with information…”

A few of the best things students say they took away from one of David’s workshops: “developing a storyboard and theme, telling a story, understanding the importance of aspect ratio for shooting, the importance of light and how to control it with white cards and balancing it with gray cards.”

Past students say the subject matter: “was covered as a good selection of the main elements…” “Thoroughly, Great footnotes of relevant anecdotes pertaining to the subject covered at the moment” “Perfect!” “The workshop was paced well with just the right amount of hands on. Just enough demonstration for enticing me to try myself….”

Brix Restaurant, the Napa Valley staple, recently under went a fresh and colorful face lift. The interiors were transformed in ten days and the menu is now farm to table fresh. The creative director heading up the change is David Gingrass with noted chef of Hawthorne Lane (now Two Restaurant).

Photographs for the website, magazine stories, and ads were created with close attention to capturing the feel of freshness and wine country casualness. Over two days of shooting, the tricky art direction required the same photographs to stand alone as either wide panoramic banner for web use or a traditional square/rectangle for print.

David Gingrass sought out my abilities to work collaboratively, be versatile and make fresh inviting photographs quickly.

Inviting, fresh and clean are some of the thoughts I seek to invoke when seeing my food photography. There is a natural and bright mindset here that brings the plate right to you ready for that perfect first bite.

With decades of experience as a home chef, I understand the food and the process of working directly with the chef to capture their creation. The food photographed is the real thing and not overly fussed with. I will mock up the setting working out the details of composition and lighting first. I next “fire” the order and get the shot in it’s freshness for a strong graphic photograph. Sometimes a couple of takes are needed to get all elements to come together as you see here.

Often as a part of telling the whole story or the story in itself, my portraiture work cares the same natural feeling as my interior photographs.

Shooting people on location for magazines, companies and corporations I create my portraits in situation and with the context of the environment. The subjects are captured with positive, open expressions, that are welcoming to the lens and viewer alike. I strive to maintain a similar lighting style as the rest of the photos from a given shoot. Art direction elements involve selecting the location of the portrait and helping with wardrobe selection, ultimately making it all look effortless.

The hotel photography of this Waikiki boutique property wanted a clean departure from the traditional Hawaiian mindset. Situated a block off the beach, Hotel Renew is providing a modern oasis in the land of tiki torches. Less than a year after it was re branded as Hotel Renew the property ran at the top of Tripadvisor’s picks for Honolulu hotels.

Hotel Renew has an urban vibe of a W Hotel without the attitude. The smallish room plates from the seventies were kept but the room interiors were fully outfitted with precision mill work. The interior designer Jiun Ho’s elements are sophisticated and simple with a nod to the understated principals that might be found in a Kyoto Ryokan.

My hotel photography used this clean and understated approach with minimal photo styling. The collection of photographs below match the art direction style of Interior Design Magazine where these photos were submitted.
