Finding The Narrative

Getting Your Story Published

By creating a great story, it will get published; by simply creating a great interior, it may not. Interior designers seeking to publish their design projects need to think like an editor and an art director. There is a need to create a cohesive story both visually and conceptually that will stand out amongst the clutter of ads in today’s magazines.

Editors create themes for each issue and your story needs to fit within that theme, this can add randomness to what gets published. Asking your self the questions below will help identify major components to a good story.

Questions of the Visual

When taken all together, is there a consistency of design style?
Do the colors and the design have freshness?
How would the photos work as an opener to the story?
Graphically how will the two page spreads hold together?
Is there enough material for a six, eight or ten page article?

Questions of the Content

Who occupies the home and what is their story?
What is the design concept, what is new?
How does the design respond to the location?
