Napa Light: Shooting with the Sun

My photos have a warm natural feeling to get this effect I like to work with the natural light as much as possible. I show up to a photo shoot with close to two pounds of lighting equipment some days I use it all others just a bit. Here is a charming vacation home east of Napa. To get the light you see I started quite early in the morning working around the home as the sun moved about.

Steven Volpe in Two Takes

San Francisco has many great designers, Steven Volpe might be the designer’s designer. What always intrigues me when shooting his projects is the juxtaposition of furnishings and objects. Like a three level chess game the assemblage within Steven’s interiors mix period, line, provenance and lux with fine aplomb. A feast for the connoisseur eye.

The photos here are of his San Francisco South of Market loft shot first for large spread in the coffee table book “Dealers Choice” and then again for the real estate needs of Neal Ward. When shooting for designers I look to show the relationship of things, when shooting for real estate I seek the relationship of the spaces.

House of Trust

Along the eastern shore on a lakeside setting this Northern Idaho home sought to be different. The homeowner wanted a large, open and light filled space; they had great views and wanted to show them. The working relationship was different too.

Take-away: 22 photos shot during nine hours. Invoice split between three firms. Value added and use: Photoshop used to enhance the views, shown on three web sites.

Interior and furniture designer Jiun Ho hired me to photograph this San Francisco Victorian that he had given a major modern makeover. Jiun submitted my photos to Western Interiors & Design magazine which became featured in a ten page spread in the April/May 2009 issue.

Since 2003 the store MARCH in San Francisco’s Pacific Height neighborhood has been sharing with the city their unique vision of modern luxury and sophisticated furnishings. Owners Sam Hamilton and Mark Cunningham, alumni of Polo, find comfort in Belgium linen, shades of taupe and the juxtaposition of period antiques with readymades of ethos.

I had the privilege to show my fine art work in December 2007 with the exhibition “New Works”. The serene abstractions of nature brought a rich and textured layer to the space.

The San Francisco Decorator Showhouse celebrated its 30th anniversary this year within a grand home a top the Gold Coast with an alumni cast of designers. Bold color and whims played throughout the house. Here are a few examples.

Dianne Chapman has always loved color. In this parlor Dianne paired rich brown walls with soft cream upholstery. Fuchsia takes the day here as the rich accent color, enlivening the space. Syrie Maugham would feel right at home.

Kendall Wilkinson was feeling blue in a great way. This master bedroom with bold turquoise walls is grounded with a rich brown sisal carpet and snapped to attention with over the top Chinoisery inspired drapes.

Ed Lobrano, always known for a well tailored room, kicks back in this crisp sitting room full of perfect selections, details, and great strokes of yellow.
