			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Often as a part of telling the whole story or the story in itself, my portraiture work cares the same natural feeling as my interior photographs.</p>
<p>Shooting people on location for magazines, companies and corporations I create my portraits in situation and with the context of the environment. The subjects are captured with positive, open expressions, that are welcoming to the lens and viewer alike. I strive to maintain a similar lighting style as the rest of the photos from a given shoot. Art direction elements involve selecting the location of the portrait and helping with wardrobe selection, ultimately making it all look effortless.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In my videos I combine Hi-Def and Low-Def photos that become the montage of still photos. By mixing the two types of photos I am able to use more unique photos that have been taken in a day of shooting and add interest to the clip. A Hi-Def photo takes upward of an hour to create, a Low-Def a couple of minutes. By mixing the two types I am able to create a very significant increase in the number of photos from a day of photography. By being fast and flexible, more usable photos are taken in a photo shoot.</p>
<p>The term Hi-Def is popularly used to speak of the quality of high definition video seen in HDTV, digital TV and digital Movies. With increase computer capacity the large digital file can be used with more information this renders images with greater detail and dynamic range.</p>
<p>So to in my still photography practice, the term Hi-Def can be used for the process and equipment needed to give the highest quality of photos for large format uses such as a two page spread in a magazine. These large file photos have greater clarity, color saturation and greater detail in highlights and shadows. The Hi-Def image starts with state of the art Digital camera, costing tens of thousands of dollars, coupled with a studied process of careful crafting the photos composition, adjusting the styling and adding lighting, finally the photo under goes post-production back in the studio with Photoshop software.</p>
<p>A Low-Def photo is one that might be taken with a point and shoot camera or a moderately prices single lens reflex camera (SLR).<br />
These photos most likely are taken quickly, without any or little additional lighting. These “handheld shots” might have digital file size 10-25 % that of a Hi-Def photo and very little post-production time will be given to these photos. Low-Def photos should not be reproduced greater than 8&#215;10 inches and rarely would these Low-Def photos be reproduced in a magazine. These Low-Def photos however look fine within a video montage and when watched on most computer screens the viewer would not know the difference.</p>
<p>Following are examples of the two types of photos taken this winter near Lake Tahoe. Shooting for interior designer Kathy Geissler Best and architect John Malick the 1 ½ day shoot captured over 60 photos.</p>

<p><strong>A Web Plan</strong></p>
<p>Stepping beyond the days of the photo portfolio your website needs to show prospective clients not only what you do but additionally your firm’s personality, its strengths, your process and uniqueness.</p>
<p>Like a business plan, having a web plan will help you focus on how you want to be perceived. You will need to decide how much information you want to provide, the layers that information comes in and the paths that you want to follow.</p>
<p>Most current web plans have many paths:<br />
•	Formal Website, based on a Flash presentation<br />
•	Blog, based on HTML<br />
•	Social networks, like Flickr and Linkedin</p>
<p>These separate paths make up your web presence and each has unique benefits.</p>
<p>A formal Flash site will be a tight professional presentation of your firm’s aesthetic, style and point of view. Designing and loading such a site takes considerable time and effort and can be quite expensive also. In the past two years, firms like <a href="http://www.bludomain.com">www.bludomain.com</a> have been selling templates costing $100 to $400 (+ hosting fees) that have great graphic and programming elements.</p>

<p>A Blog could be similar to a newsletter. Freshness and depth of information can be put together in short time, with minimal cost and modified with ease. Blogs can be set up for special projects or for sub-niche areas of your practice.</p>
<p>Blog, a contraction for the term &#8220;Web log&#8221; is a Web site, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or videos. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. First popularized with the likes of MySpace.com and Facebook.com the genre has expanded to include political blogs, travel blogs, house blogs, fashion blogs, project blogs, education blogs, niche blogs, classical music blogs, quizzing blogs and legal blogs (often referred to as a blawgs) or dreamlogs.</p>

<p>The Social network component puts you within a larger community and shows other facets of you and your firm&#8217;s personality. LinkedIn, <a href="http://www.linkedin.com">www.linkedin.com</a>, is gaining wide spread adoption and use for professional and corporate networking. Facebook,<br />
<a href="http://www.facebook.com">www.facebook.com</a>, is primarily for individuals and their social networks but is another way to connect with people from your industry and possibly potential clients. Think of these sites as a way to show informal, out of the box, and deeper aspects of your firm that would be otherwise difficult to fit in your formal or Blog site.</p>
<p><strong><br />
A New Tool: &#8220;Action&#8230;Cut!&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>Short videos are going to be more and more part of creative and effective websites. They engage viewers and hold their attention. Videos work in ways that slide shows do not, they allow a more direct presentation that goes beyond words and clicks. The traditional website is dependent on click and views making the host dependent on the viewer discovering the information.  A video clip packages the information and serves it up, a passive engagement that gives the host more control in framing their presentation.  Finally, younger generations are more accustomed seeing images move and are attracted to this type of visual.</p>
<p>The typical web viewer spends 55 seconds on a website. A video presentation of two minutes will help keep the viewer on the website longer and if done well can sell your services’ many facets more directly. Potential clients coming upon your website, seeing your clip, take that first impression to start the connection you will build upon.</p>
<p>We are also seeing magazines and newspapers adding video and multimedia on their websites, our own California Home and Design, Interior Design Magazine and the New York times are some examples. Here is a clip from Interior Design Magazine:<br />

<p>Video will change the way projects are documented; a hierarchy of still and moving images will make up the final video. Hero shots taken with great care and control will be foremost, binder/transition shots will be used to fill out the video and add context and finally direct videos of interviews and motion.<br />

<p>Samantha, who has had her practice for three years in Ross, wanted me to create photographs that would be paired together on her website <a href="http://samanthalyman.com/" target="_blank">samanthalyman.com</a>. She sought to showcase the broad strokes and tasty details that make a room.</p>
<p>Careful consideration was given to the aspect ratio of the compositions so the photographs could work in a one third two third arrangement as tall verticals and horizontal rectangles. With pre-planning and attentive art direction throughout the day we created these perfect takes.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Brix Restaurant, the Napa Valley staple, recently under went a fresh and colorful face lift. The interiors were transformed in ten days and the menu is now farm to table fresh. The creative director heading up the change is David Gingrass with noted chef of Hawthorne Lane (now Two Restaurant).</p>
<p>Photographs for the website, magazine stories, and ads were created with close attention to capturing the feel of freshness and wine country casualness. Over two days of shooting, the tricky art direction required the same photographs to stand alone as either wide panoramic banner for web use or a traditional square/rectangle for print.</p>
<p>David Gingrass sought out my abilities to work collaboratively, be versatile and make fresh inviting photographs quickly.</p>
